Technical Discussion » Mouse locking up

So far this has only happened while running Houdini apprentice ver. 6.1.208.
My system: k2m2 combo board, athlon 1.8 xp, 512m ddr, pny g-force fx with 2 compaq cv735 monitors and a microsoft usb intellimouse, XP PRO.
So far this has happened 5 times, each time I have had other things running also, IE internet explorer or WMP9 (watching tutorials).
The only way I could get control of the mouse when it locked up was to unplug it and plug it back in.
I am not sure if this related to houdini or not but thought I would post a notification.
Checking my system and may reinstall OS.
Thanks.

The path object just does not work in this instance, when you parent the controles you get uncontroled chaos.
To tell the truth the idea I had needed more work but it does work.
These files were created in version 6.1.208.
The first was created after I saw the trailer for “Hellboy.”
http://www.mygraph.net/houdini/files/tentacle.hipnc [mygraph.net]
The second is a revamped version that uses controls on object space.
If you were to create a controll object for the curve it would be a little more eligant.
http://www.mygraph.net/houdini/files/tentacle_redux.hipnc [mygraph.net]
Hope these files help. The second was done quickly and shows it.

You could also try wirecapture and wire deform.
parent a series of nuls in object space and then object merge the point sop of each null. with an add sop create a curve and use that to capture your geometry.
with the proper use of restrictions IE locking translates in x y axis for the nulls you should be able to get the effect you are looking for.
Remember to capture everything at frame 0

If they do shut down the apprentice version I will be disapointed but I have gained experience in 3D that I would not have otherwise.
Personaly I really am not well enough placed to look a gift horse in the mouth and ask for his papers.
I plan on being a digital animator, and I will be. I hope to gain enough knowledge to create a demo reel, one that has the sidefx logo stamped on it aught to carry some clout.
So the big companies have their own trainers, those trainers started with the same thing I have, a drive to learn, to create, to be better, I now have a tool that will help me.
I hope that by the time I am good enough to hire, the price of Houdini Master will have dropped some, I am saving, I Believe I will need it.
I just looked at this post and realised that I was ranting and deleted 3/4's of it.
All I can really say is if you can not except something that is free then say, “Thank you, no,” and walk away.

Technical Discussion » visualize channel(s) sop

I am wondering if anyone might be able to tell me if and/or how this this idea may be executed.
I want to be able take the translate vector from an object and use it to generate a curve that is visable in the viewer.
I know that not all keyframes would have all 3 values explicitly set but they could be interpolated.
I am looking at this as a method of visualising an objects path through a scene. This visualized curve could then be used to track ahead or behind the object with a camera.
With realtime updates it could be used to show the resulting path as you keyframe it.
I have been reading about scripting and believe it can be done but am at a loss as to how.
There are even more aplications for this idea

what you want to do is uncheck the pivot around centroid box, put the negetive value of your radius in the Y aspect of the pivot, this puts the pivot at the bottom of your sphere.
Now make your transformations in the matrix not with the handle.

Also, I needed to collapse 3 operators into a subnet. I selected all 3 op's and right clicked and selected “collapse selected into subnet” and got a subnet Op. I then right clicked the subnet and selected “create type from” and named it and set Min and Max Inputs to 2 and accepted it. Well when I accepted this subnet Op, it also disappeared and I got the 3 original operators in the network editor window.
I believe that you dropped down into your subnet, did you have the small connectors visable?

David on I am not sure if this will help but under the render tab of the bone object the fourth and fifth parameters will allow you to enter a geometry file that over ride the default geometry.
Hope this helps

With 120 moving parts not counting controls this strait forward walk was tough, but now that I want to add the ability to turn, react to the environment and attacks, this beast is becoming a major source of migrains.
Just wondering what is the best site for learning the subtle art of rigging.
Right now I am looking at approximatly 8 controls per leg and it may go up

I am modeling a variation of the obligatory trekie ship and have discovered a few problems, for me atleast, I hope.
I have used an atmospheric to simulate a radiant field, ops: I have got to tone it down a bit.
http://www.dragonranger.cjb.net/images/warp.jpg [dragonranger.cjb.net] incase you can not see the image
By the way the green glow in the nacelle is partialy accidental there is a vex metal shader set to green the same as the light and fog.
the field is lite by a dedicated light and the whole thing is parented.
:arrow: Nacelle->field->light
Now for my questions. How do I make the Ramscoop Glow(the red area)?
I currently have a light directed at it, but as you can see it does not work.
I also tried a glass texture and placing the light behind it that did not work either.
And, this may seem unrelated, but is there a way to simulate a light emiting diode(indicator lights)?

Houdini Lounge » How do I split am object for reforming
- Dragon Ranger

I am woundering how I would split a solid object into two parts so that each is a compleat object. Then be able to fit the peices back to geather with only a seam showing.
first I delete the lower half then move back up the tree and spawn a second delete that removes the opposite half.
when they are merged the original object is restored.
What I want to know is.
How do I Build a surface across the opening of one half that will match the surface that is built over the opening of the second half?
Long winded I know but I have Tried Polyknit and the surfaces do not match.
Thanks Dragon Ranger
